My dad was a carpenter. Growing up, I watched him walk through houses the way most people walk through parks. He saw the grain of wood trim before he saw the paint color. He felt the seam of a drywall patch before anyone else noticed the seam existed. He'd run his hand along a countertop and tell you, without looking, whether it was leveled right.
